Job Purpose
The Testing & Commissioning Engineer will support the testing, commissioning, and functional verification of electrical systems and equipment at power plants and substations before they become fully operational. The role involves site testing, equipment inspections, troubleshooting, technical documentation, and coordination with project teams to ensure systems perform safely and according to approved requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Testing & Commissioning
- Perform electrical testing and commissioning activities at power plants and substations.
- Conduct functional tests according to approved testing procedures, schemes, and project requirements.
- Assist with the testing and commissioning of electrical equipment, including protection relays, switchgear, transformers, and associated systems.
- Participate in site commissioning activities and support project teams during equipment energization and functional testing.
- Coordinate testing activities during customer inspections and acceptance procedures.
- Identify and resolve technical issues encountered during testing and commissioning.
- Follow approved testing methodologies and safety procedures during all site activities.
Electrical Equipment Testing
- Support testing of substation and power plant electrical systems and equipment.
- Assist in testing protection and control systems, relays, switchgear, transformers, and related electrical equipment.
- Use appropriate testing tools and instruments in accordance with approved procedures.
- Verify equipment functionality and identify deviations requiring corrective action.
- Support troubleshooting activities during site testing and commissioning.
Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare test reports for electrical equipment, systems, and commissioning activities.
- Maintain accurate records of testing results, technical issues, non-conformances, and corrective actions.
- Update project documentation following testing activities and equipment modifications.
- Report testing progress, deviations, technical problems, and completed activities to the relevant project team.
- Ensure commissioning records are maintained according to project and company requirements.
Technical Support & Design Review
- Review relevant electrical design and technical documents before project implementation or release.
- Provide technical support to project and commissioning teams during site activities.
- Identify potential technical issues in design documentation and communicate them to the appropriate engineering team.
- Ensure testing activities are aligned with approved technical specifications and project requirements.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Support quality assurance activities throughout testing and commissioning projects.
- Identify opportunities to improve testing procedures, processes, and operational efficiency.
- Initiate corrective and preventive actions for identified technical or quality issues.
- Maintain records of improvement actions and corrective measures.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in testing and commissioning operations.
Team & Operational Responsibilities
Team Support
- Work closely with senior engineers, technicians, project teams, and site personnel.
- Support the coordination and allocation of testing activities within assigned projects.
- Assist in providing technical guidance and knowledge sharing to junior team members when required.
- Promote effective teamwork and communication during site commissioning activities.
Project Delivery
- Complete planned testing and commissioning activities according to project schedules.
- Use testing equipment, manpower, and other resources efficiently.
- Monitor assigned activities and report progress, delays, deviations, and technical issues.
- Prepare periodic reports covering completed work and outstanding commissioning activities.
Problem Solving
- Investigate technical problems identified during electrical testing and commissioning.
- Assist in troubleshooting equipment and system issues.
- Escalate complex technical problems to senior engineers or project management when required.
Process Improvement
- Follow established testing procedures, work instructions, and engineering processes.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation in testing and commissioning activities.
- Support the implementation of improved procedures and technical practices.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all applicable health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements during site activities.
- Conduct testing and commissioning work in accordance with approved safety procedures.
- Comply with company policies, project procedures, work instructions, and applicable electrical standards.
- Maintain safe working practices when handling electrical equipment and testing instruments.
Academic Qualification
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related electrical engineering discipline.
Work Experience
- Fresh graduates to 2 years of relevant experience.
- Candidates with internship or practical training experience in electrical testing, commissioning, substations, or power plants may be considered.
