Job Overview
The Mechanical Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and servicing mechanical machinery and equipment used in power generation facilities. The role focuses on supporting the reliable operation of simple-cycle and combined-cycle power generation units and Balance of Plant (BOP) systems while helping minimise equipment failures, production downtime, and operational interruptions.
The position requires practical experience in thermal power plant mechanical maintenance, equipment overhauls, troubleshooting, and preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and servicing activities on a wide range of mechanical equipment and systems within a power plant.
- Carry out preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance according to approved schedules and procedures.
- Respond to urgent equipment failures and breakdowns, including on-call maintenance duties when required.
- Restore mechanical equipment and systems to safe and reliable operating condition as quickly as practical.
- Work independently or support Technician Engineers on assigned maintenance activities.
- Review work instructions, maintenance procedures, drawings, and associated risks before starting assigned tasks.
- Select and use appropriate tools, equipment, and materials to complete maintenance activities safely and efficiently.
Power Plant Equipment Maintenance
- Perform mechanical maintenance on equipment used in gas and steam power generation systems.
- Support maintenance activities involving gas turbines, steam turbines, waste heat boilers, compressors, pumps, cooling towers, and other Balance of Plant equipment.
- Participate in planned maintenance, inspections, equipment overhauls, and troubleshooting activities.
- Support maintenance of thermal desalination and Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant equipment where applicable.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify recurring mechanical problems.
Breakdown and Reliability Improvement
- Investigate repeated equipment failures and breakdowns.
- Identify potential causes of recurring mechanical problems and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Implement approved solutions to help prevent repeated failures and improve equipment reliability.
- Escalate significant equipment conditions, safety concerns, and operational issues to the supervisor or relevant engineering team.
Maintenance Team Coordination
- Work closely with Technician Engineers, supervisors, operations teams, and other maintenance personnel.
- Provide support and guidance to contract workers carrying out mechanical repair and maintenance activities.
- Ensure assigned maintenance work is completed according to approved plans, procedures, quality requirements, and safety standards.
- Communicate work progress and equipment conditions to supervisors.
Health, Safety and Environment
- Perform all maintenance activities in accordance with EHS policies, plant procedures, and safe working practices.
- Identify workplace hazards and follow appropriate control measures before and during maintenance work.
- Work safely around high-pressure steam, high-voltage areas, arc-flash hazards, high noise levels, heat, humidity, dust, chemicals, acids, mineral oils, and other industrial hazards.
- Follow required safety procedures when working at height or around operating power plant equipment.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow site safety requirements at all times.
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum Qualification
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or
- Mechanical Craft/Trade Certificate or equivalent qualification.
Required Experience
- Diploma holders: Minimum 5 years of relevant mechanical maintenance experience, preferably in a thermal power plant.
- Craft/Trade Certificate holders: Minimum 8 years of experience in mechanical maintenance.
- Hands-on experience with power plant equipment and major overhauls is required.
- Experience with GE Frame 9E/9FA gas turbines, steam turbines, waste heat boilers, and Balance of Plant equipment is highly relevant.
- Experience with thermal desalination and other BOP systems is advantageous.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of mechanical maintenance tools and equipment.
- Practical understanding of gas turbines and steam turbines.
- Knowledge of waste heat boilers, compressors, pumps, cooling towers, and power plant auxiliary systems.
- Familiarity with Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant equipment and thermal desalination systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment and identify potential causes of equipment failure.
- Basic computer literacy and ability to use PC-based systems.
- Ability to understand and follow technical instructions, maintenance procedures, and safety requirements.
