Job Purpose

The Internal Auditor – Capital Projects is responsible for conducting internal audit assignments to assess governance, risk management, and internal control processes. The role involves performing audit testing, reviewing financial and operational processes, identifying control weaknesses, and providing practical recommendations to improve compliance, efficiency, and risk management.

Key Responsibilities

Audit Planning and Preparation

  • Support the planning and execution of internal audit engagements in line with the approved audit plan.
  • Review policies, procedures, processes, reports, contracts, records, and other relevant documentation.
  • Understand the objectives, key risks, processes, and internal controls within assigned capital project areas.
  • Prepare audit programs, checklists, information requests, and testing procedures under the direction of the Senior Internal Auditor or Audit Manager.
  • Identify areas requiring additional audit attention based on risk and control assessments.

Internal Audit Execution

  • Conduct financial, operational, compliance, and process audits across assigned business functions and capital projects.
  • Perform control testing, data analysis, document reviews, interviews, and process walkthroughs.
  • Evaluate compliance with company policies, approved procedures, delegated authorities, contractual requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Assess the design, implementation, and operating effectiveness of internal controls.
  • Collect sufficient and reliable audit evidence to support findings and conclusions.
  • Prepare complete, accurate, and well-referenced audit working papers.
  • Review project-related transactions, processes, and controls where applicable.

Audit Findings and Reporting

  • Identify control deficiencies, compliance issues, operational risks, and process improvement opportunities.
  • Analyze the root causes, potential risks, and business impact of identified audit observations.
  • Discuss preliminary findings with process owners and obtain relevant explanations and supporting documentation.
  • Develop clear audit observations and practical recommendations for management review.
  • Assist in preparing internal audit reports, presentations, and supporting documentation.
  • Escalate significant risks, suspected irregularities, or sensitive issues to the appropriate audit management.

Corrective Action Follow-Up

  • Monitor the implementation of agreed corrective and improvement actions.
  • Coordinate with process owners to obtain evidence supporting the closure of audit findings.
  • Maintain accurate records of open, overdue, and completed audit recommendations.
  • Review whether corrective actions adequately address the identified risks and control weaknesses.
  • Report delayed, incomplete, or ineffective corrective actions to the Senior Internal Auditor or Audit Manager.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Perform audit assignments in accordance with the organization’s internal audit methodology and applicable professional standards.
  • Maintain independence, objectivity, confidentiality, integrity, and professional conduct.
  • Apply appropriate professional judgment and due care throughout audit engagements.
  • Keep technical and professional knowledge up to date in internal auditing, risk management, governance, and internal controls.
  • Participate in professional development activities to strengthen audit and analytical capabilities.

  • Prepare periodic reports covering completed activities, progress, and significant deviations.

  • Escalate complex or significant operational and control issues to the appropriate management level.

  • Support improvements to internal control processes and audit quality.

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, automation, and more efficient audit practices.

  • Comply with applicable company policies, procedures, professional standards, and work instructions.

Health, Safety and Environment

  • Follow relevant health, safety, quality, and environmental policies and controls applicable to assigned work activities.

Educational Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Internal Auditing, or a related field.
  • Professional qualifications or certifications in internal auditing, accounting, risk, or compliance may be advantageous.

Work Experience

  • 2 to 4 years of relevant professional experience in internal audit, external audit, compliance, risk management, finance, or a related field.
  • Experience auditing capital projects, project controls, construction, engineering, or major infrastructure activities can be beneficial.
