Job Purpose

The Field Operator is responsible for monitoring plant operating parameters from the field and coordinating closely with the Central Control Room (CCR) Operator to support safe and reliable plant operations. The role involves carrying out plant start-up and shutdown activities in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), responding promptly to operational abnormalities and emergencies, and ensuring that plant equipment operates within established limits.

Key Responsibilities

Field Operations

• Monitor plant equipment, systems, and operating parameters from the field and record readings accurately in designated log sheets.
• Coordinate with the CCR Operator, Shift Supervisor, and Shift In-Charge on operational activities that may affect plant performance.
• Support the safe start-up, shutdown, changeover, and normal operation of plant equipment according to approved SOPs and work instructions.
• Conduct regular field inspections of plant equipment and auxiliary systems to identify abnormal conditions, unusual noises, leaks, or parameter deviations.
• Immediately report equipment abnormalities or operational issues to the CCR Operator, Shift Supervisor, or Shift In-Charge.
• Maintain accurate shift logbooks and record significant plant activities, events, readings, and operational observations.
• Perform equipment changeovers according to established schedules and operating procedures.
• Raise work requests, defect notifications, or maintenance requirements for faulty or abnormal equipment.
• Assist with equipment and system isolation, line-up, and restoration before and after maintenance activities in coordination with the control room and shift team.
• Follow approved operating procedures, work instructions, emergency procedures, and basic control logic requirements.
• Maintain good housekeeping standards in assigned plant areas and ensure work areas are properly cleaned following maintenance activities.
• Assist with the safe response to plant emergencies and abnormal operating conditions.
• Support the training, orientation, and familiarization of newly assigned operators.
• Ensure all field activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with plant operating standards.

Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE)

• Follow all applicable health, safety, security, and environmental procedures, rules, and control measures.
• Maintain awareness of firefighting equipment and emergency response requirements within the assigned operating area.
• Monitor relevant environmental and operational parameters and report deviations to the Shift Supervisor, Shift Engineer, or CCR Operator.
• Identify and report unsafe conditions, environmental concerns, equipment defects, and potential operational hazards.
• Follow proper procedures for waste identification, segregation, handling, and disposal.
• Participate in maintaining a safe and environmentally compliant plant operating environment.

Policies, Procedures & Compliance

• Follow company policies, departmental procedures, SOPs, work instructions, and operational standards.
• Ensure all assigned activities are completed consistently and according to approved plant procedures.
• Maintain accurate operational records and documentation as required.
• Comply with applicable quality, HSE, environmental, and operational requirements.

Communication & Coordination

The Field Operator works closely with:

• Shift Engineers
• Shift Supervisors / Shift In-Charge
• CCR Operators
• Maintenance teams
• Other plant operations personnel

Effective communication and teamwork are essential for maintaining safe, reliable, and continuous plant operations.

Qualifications

• Technical Diploma in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
• Relevant technical or vocational training in plant operations is an advantage.

Experience

• 1–3 years of experience in field operations, preferably within Power Generation, Water Desalination, Renewable Energy, or similar industrial plants.
• Experience as a local/field operator in one or more of the following environments is preferred:
  • Conventional Power Plants
  • Combined Cycle Power Plants
  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) Desalination Plants
  • Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) Desalination Plants
  • Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) Plants
  • Solar Power Plants
  • Wind Energy Plants
  • Other Power and Water Utility Facilities

Required Skills

• Good knowledge of plant equipment and field operating activities.
• Understanding of plant processes, equipment operation, and basic control systems.
• Ability to read and understand P&IDs, SOPs, work instructions, and basic control logic documentation.
• Knowledge of plant start-up, shutdown, equipment changeover, isolation, and line-up procedures.
• Awareness of HSE, environmental, and quality standards.
• Knowledge of firefighting equipment and emergency response procedures.
• Understanding of waste identification, classification, handling, and disposal.
• Strong observation and attention-to-detail skills.
• Ability to identify abnormal equipment conditions and report them promptly.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work effectively with CCR Operators, Shift Supervisors, Engineers, and maintenance personnel.
