Job Purpose

The Electrical Automotive & Equipment Technician is responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems in automotive vehicles and heavy equipment. The role involves inspecting electrical components, identifying faults, carrying out repairs, and ensuring vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Automotive & Equipment Electrical Systems

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical systems in automotive vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
  • Inspect electrical components and identify faults using appropriate testing tools and equipment.
  • Maintain and repair starter motors, alternators, batteries, charging systems, wiring, fuses, relays, sensors, coils, and other electrical components.
  • Inspect and repair electrical systems associated with engines and equipment.
  • Perform electrical maintenance according to required safety and quality standards.

Electrical Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

  • Read and interpret electrical wiring diagrams for different types of vehicles and equipment.
  • Understand standard electrical symbols, wiring circuits, and component layouts.
  • Trace electrical circuits to locate faults and determine the required repair.
  • Test and measure fuses, relays, wiring, batteries, and other electrical components.
  • Diagnose dashboard electrical faults and repair or replace defective components.
  • Inspect sensors and ignition coils and carry out repairs or replacements when required.

Automotive Air Conditioning Systems

  • Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair automotive and equipment air-conditioning systems.
  • Identify electrical faults affecting AC performance and carry out the necessary repairs.
  • Check related electrical components to ensure proper operation of the AC system.

Equipment & Vehicle Inspection

  • Conduct comprehensive electrical inspections of automotive vehicles and equipment.
  • Check electrical systems, engine-related components, charging systems, dashboards, wiring, and control components.
  • Identify potential electrical issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ensure repaired vehicles and equipment meet operational and safety requirements.

Hydraulic & Engine Knowledge

  • Apply working knowledge of hydraulic systems when diagnosing equipment-related issues.
  • Understand basic engine systems and their electrical components.
  • Work with mechanical and maintenance teams when electrical faults are connected to hydraulic or engine systems.

Maintenance & Safety

  • Follow established maintenance procedures and workplace safety requirements.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and electrical testing instruments correctly.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and ensure tools and equipment are used safely.
  • Follow quality control procedures during inspection, troubleshooting, and repair activities.
  • Report identified faults, repair requirements, and recurring electrical problems to the appropriate supervisor.

Qualification

  • High School Diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Technical training in automotive electrical systems or equipment maintenance is preferred.

Work Experience

  • 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in automotive electrical maintenance, heavy equipment electrical systems, or vehicle repair.
  • Practical experience with starter motors, alternators, batteries, charging systems, wiring, fuses, relays, sensors, coils, and automotive AC systems.
