Job Overview

The Section Manager – Material Planning will manage the planning and availability of raw materials, components, and other production requirements.

A major part of the position involves coordinating with procurement, production, warehouse, logistics, sales, and quality teams. The objective is to maintain efficient material flow while controlling inventory levels and reducing the risk of production delays.

Key Responsibilities

Material Planning

Manage material planning activities according to production requirements, demand forecasts, inventory availability, and departmental objectives.

Review upcoming material requirements and ensure necessary purchase requisitions are raised on time.

Monitor planning activities to help ensure production teams receive the materials required to meet manufacturing schedules.

Improve material planning accuracy by reviewing demand patterns, production requirements, stock availability, and supplier lead times.

Inventory Management

Monitor inventory levels for raw materials, components, consumables, and other production-related items.

Help maintain an appropriate balance between material availability and inventory costs while minimizing both shortages and excessive stock.

Coordinate with warehouse teams to maintain reliable inventory records and investigate stock discrepancies when identified.

Review consumption trends and lead times to recommend improvements to inventory policies and safety-stock requirements.

Procurement and Production Coordination

Work closely with procurement teams to monitor material orders and expected supplier deliveries.

Coordinate with production planners to ensure material availability supports current and upcoming manufacturing schedules.

Communicate potential shortages or delivery risks early so appropriate corrective action can be taken.

Collaborate with logistics, sales, warehouse, and quality teams to support efficient movement of materials throughout the operational process.

Performance Monitoring

Track relevant material-planning performance indicators, including material availability, inventory accuracy, order fulfillment, and planning effectiveness.

Prepare regular reports for management covering inventory status, material requirements, potential shortages, and overall planning performance.

Analyze gaps between planned and actual requirements and recommend corrective measures to improve forecasting and planning accuracy.

Supply Chain Risk Management

Identify potential risks that could affect material availability, including supplier delays, unexpected demand changes, inaccurate forecasts, and inventory shortages.

Develop practical mitigation measures to minimize disruption to production.

These measures may include reviewing safety-stock levels, improving forecasting processes, coordinating alternative sourcing options, or adjusting material schedules.

Team Leadership

Lead and support employees involved in material planning activities while establishing clear responsibilities and performance expectations.

Identify high-performing employees and support their professional development and readiness for additional responsibilities.

Provide appropriate guidance to team members requiring performance improvement and maintain a fair, performance-focused working environment.

Ensure responsibilities and decision-making authority are appropriately delegated according to company policies.

Business Planning and Performance

Translate organizational and departmental objectives into practical material-planning activities.

Monitor progress against established plans, targets, budgets, and performance indicators.

Take corrective action when operational performance does not meet expected results.

Prepare periodic progress reports and provide management with relevant information to support operational decision-making.

Cost and Process Optimization

Support cost-efficient material planning by improving inventory utilization and reducing unnecessary stock, shortages, delays, and operational waste.

Identify opportunities to improve existing planning procedures and introduce more efficient workflows.

Support greater use of digital systems and automation where they can improve material planning, inventory visibility, reporting, and decision-making.

Quality and Continuous Improvement

Maintain a strong focus on quality throughout material planning and supply chain activities.

Look for opportunities to improve processes, planning accuracy, inventory control, and cross-functional coordination.

Candidates should be comfortable adapting to new technologies, management practices, systems, and changing business requirements.

Support a safe, secure, and compliant workplace by ensuring activities within the area of responsibility follow applicable health, safety, environmental, and company requirements.

Educational Qualification

Applicants should hold a:

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

Experience Required

Approximately 10–15 years of relevant professional experience is required.

Previous experience in material planning, manufacturing, inventory management, procurement, production planning, or supply chain operations would be particularly relevant for this position.
