Job Purpose

The Engineer I – Field is responsible for supporting the installation and delivery of engineering projects, ensuring that work is completed within agreed time, cost, quality, safety, and environmental requirements.

The role involves coordinating site activities, supervising engineering contractors, working with operations and maintenance teams, and supporting the Lead Engineer in delivering low- to medium-value engineering projects. The position also provides opportunities to take responsibility for selected projects and contribute to continuous improvement and technical knowledge development.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Project Delivery

  • Support the Lead Engineer in coordinating the installation of engineering projects.
  • Plan, implement, and deliver engineering projects within defined time, cost, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Coordinate site activities and ensure installations meet project specifications.
  • Monitor project progress and immediately highlight technical, operational, or delivery issues.
  • Support project teams in achieving stakeholder expectations and agreed project outcomes.

Site Coordination

  • Coordinate with Safety, Security, operations, maintenance, and area owners during project execution.
  • Ensure required permits and site approvals are available before work begins.
  • Support the safe and timely execution of installation activities.
  • Provide technical support to operations and maintenance teams when plant modifications are required.
  • Ensure site activities are coordinated effectively to minimise disruption to ongoing operations.

Contractor Management

  • Direct, monitor, and evaluate engineering contractors and installation teams.
  • Ensure contractors comply with company requirements relating to health, safety, environmental, quality, and security performance.
  • Monitor contractor work quality and progress.
  • Address site issues and escalate significant concerns to the appropriate project or engineering leadership.
  • Support effective coordination of contractors and project resources.

Project Engineering

  • Act as a Lead Engineer or Support Engineer on assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with engineering and design teams to develop effective project solutions.
  • Apply engineering knowledge and practical site experience to resolve project challenges.
  • Ensure engineering modifications and installations are carried out correctly and effectively.
  • Work within established project budgets, priorities, and implementation plans.

Technical Support

  • Provide engineering guidance to operations and maintenance managers.
  • Support the implementation of plant modifications and engineering improvements.
  • Apply sound engineering practices when developing and implementing project solutions.
  • Contribute technical knowledge and practical experience to engineering projects.

Team Development

  • Support the training and coaching of junior engineers and National graduates.
  • Share technical knowledge and practical site experience with project team members.
  • Contribute to strengthening the department’s engineering knowledge base.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, technicians, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in company continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support implementation of improvement projects using sound engineering practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project execution, safety, quality, and operational performance.

Project & Operational Responsibility

Depending on the assignment, the Engineer I – Field may act as Lead Engineer for projects with relatively low capital value, complexity, or risk.

The role may be responsible for:

  • Managing day-to-day project activities.
  • Delivering projects against agreed time, cost, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Working within approved budgets and project schedules.
  • Coordinating project teams and contractor resources.
  • Supporting projects involving installation teams of up to approximately 100 contractor personnel.
  • Leading project teams consisting of support engineers and technicians when assigned.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Maintain high standards of health, safety, environmental, and quality performance across project activities.
  • Ensure engineering contractors follow required company safety procedures.
  • Coordinate with site safety and security teams.
  • Ensure required permits and approvals are obtained before work execution.
  • Identify and escalate safety, quality, or environmental concerns.
  • Support a safe and compliant working environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Technical qualification in Civil Engineering or a related civil discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of site experience in safety management and construction processes.
