About the Role
As an Estimation Engineer – Special Purpose Vehicles, you will be responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates and commercial proposals for custom-built vehicles, including fire trucks, rescue vehicles, Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles, and other specialized chassis builds.
You will collaborate with engineering, sales, procurement, and production teams to develop technically accurate and commercially competitive quotations while ensuring compliance with industry standards and customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Review customer enquiries, technical specifications, drawings, and tender documents to define project scope and identify clarification requirements.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates, Bills of Materials (BOM), and pricing for chassis, body structures, firefighting systems, electrical components, hydraulics, and vehicle accessories.
- Coordinate with engineering and design teams to verify manufacturability, vehicle stability, interfaces, and technical feasibility.
- Work closely with procurement teams and suppliers to obtain current pricing, evaluate alternative sourcing options, and manage lead-time considerations.
- Develop labour, material, subcontractor, and overhead cost models while ensuring competitive pricing and healthy profit margins.
- Prepare professional quotations, tender documents, commercial schedules, and proposal submissions.
- Support commercial negotiations by providing pricing justifications and detailed cost breakdowns.
- Maintain estimating databases, standard costing libraries, and historical project records to improve estimating accuracy.
- Participate in post-tender reviews and continuous process improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with relevant safety regulations, engineering standards, and customer specifications.
- Support project teams by evaluating pricing impacts for design changes and variation orders.
- Maintain accurate bid documentation, estimate revisions, and reporting within ERP and CRM systems.
Required Skills
- Strong experience in estimating and cost planning for special purpose vehicles, fire trucks, commercial vehicles, or heavy equipment.
- Excellent understanding of vehicle chassis integration, body fabrication, firefighting systems, hydraulics, electrical wiring, and ancillary equipment.
- Ability to prepare detailed Bills of Materials (BOM), labour estimates, and commercial cost models.
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, technical specifications, wiring diagrams, and 3D models.
- Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with ERP, CRM, or estimating software.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum 3–6 years of experience in estimation, commercial engineering, or proposal management within the automotive, special purpose vehicle, or heavy equipment industry.
- Experience working with procurement teams, suppliers, and manufacturing operations.
- Knowledge of vehicle costing, supply chain management, freight costing, and import/export logistics is an advantage.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with experience in the following areas will have an advantage:
- Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles
- Fire truck manufacturing
- NFPA, EN1846, ICAO, or similar firefighting vehicle standards
- SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or other ERP platforms
- Procurement and supply chain costing
- International logistics and Incoterms
